Australian Media Star Ray Martin

By Maude Moses

Aussie media success, Ray Martin (1944), was the first of his family to attend college. His plan was to teach English History. Instead, he launched a monumentally luminous career in television. Born in Richmond, New South Wales, he has captured the Order of Australia, the Gold Logie and the Centenary Medal.

He has never shied away from controversy to support something he believes in. He openly criticized Rupert Murdoch, patriarch of the Sky media empire, in the heat of the phone tapping scandal. He has also slated the ratings system and the executive television producers in Australia for the dumbing down of news and current affairs coverage.

At the moment, he is leading the charge to change the Aussie flag by removing the Union Jack from its top-left corner. He and his comrades fell this symbol of British heritage is no longer relevant to today's Australia. They country will most likely become a republic, so this iconography even more redundant than it is now.

Supporters of keeping the flag just the way it is proclaim that men have fought and died under the existing flag. Replacing it with a new design would be an insult to their sacrifice. Pro-change campaigners are invited to leave Australia if they cannot support the flag just the way it is. A Facebook page has even been set up attacking Martin and his movement. In these challenging times, altering it would be a waste of money.

According to the presenter, certain producers of news and current affairs programs are insulting the intelligence of the average Aussie by diluting the content of their programs. He feels that minute-by-minute ratings systems have been a contributing factor in this sorry state of affairs.

Martin has penned two books about his life and career. The first, published in 2009, was entitled, 'Ray - Stories of My Life'. More recently, he has been promoting his latest offering, 'Ray Martins Favourites: The Stories behind the Legends'. ray martin
