How Does One Become A Motivational Speaker?

By Pete Malcolm

A career as a motivational speaker can be very lucrative and rewarding. The first step in becoming a motivational speaker is to identify what you will speak about. There are many topics to motivate and inspire others. You must look at your experience, your passion, and your story in order to be able to speak to groups about them. It is also important to meet other motivational speakers. Talk to them to find out how they started, what works for them, what doesn't. Learn from those who are already giving motivational speeches. Bounce your ideas off others and try out your speech on professionals and friends. Work on the timing. These are things you can learn from listening to others.

Another step to take, besides identifying your passion and experience, is to determine what you have in common with your audience. They will only be inspired if they can identify with you in some way. The problem you faced and overcame must feel relevant in some way to the people you are addressing. When they see your courage or ingenuity, they will find those qualities in themselves if you seem familiar and as ordinary as they feel. You want to help them find solutions to their problems and challenges through your story to make it possible for them to move forward. That is what motivates.

Singing acts are a good choice for corporate entertainment. Song, like laughter, is a shared experience. We all know songs, and a group singing familiar songs will bring the audience together smiling. Song also touches emotion and memory. Evoking emotion will make the event more memorable, and enjoyable. Circus acts are available for corporate events. There are also jugglers and ventriloquists. Any professional entertainer knows how to capture the audience, and those who do corporate events discuss beforehand who will be attending, and will tailor their act to suit the attendees.

A comedian at a corporate event can encourage better communication and strengthen motivation in an audience. The power of humor can carry over to the office life of a corporation, bringing a new energy and sense of fun to the workplace. A skilled corporate comedian will inspire joy, which carries over, and becomes a shared experience with co-workers long after the event is over. New ideas of what could be emerge from the freedom of laughter.

You might start by joining groups that specialize in public speaking. Volunteering at charity events is another way to get started, and a chance to fine tune your speech in a public venue. The bottom line is that you have to work at it, believe in yourself, and deliver motivation and inspiration to your audience. You want people to leave your speech believing that they can get what they want. A career as a motivational speaker can be a very lucrative and rewarding career.
