The dimensions and other properties are guided by the culture from where the wearer has borrowed the design. The industry has seen an emergence in design variations especially due to the entry of professional designers. The results are personalized turbans with custom colors and dimensions.

The features of each turban are determined by the selected design. An example is the Sikh turban which is tied to a characteristic peak shape. It has more significance beyond design which includes religious and functional purposes. It is used to contain the long hair by the men since it is not supposed to be cut at all. This objective can only be met if it is long enough. A long piece of cloth will also help sharpen the peak.

The Taliban turban is unique from one area to the other. The dynamics used to achieve this uniqueness determine the features that you will get for your cloth. Two turbans have been used which are long enough to intertwine. Multiple colors or plain black have been widely used. Other areas prefer a hat to the turban.

Iran is thought to have been the origin of the word turban. Their religious leaders have adopted a white or black colored turban that is wrapped flat and circular around the head. The cloth is referred by another name as a dulband. An appropriate piece of cloth for this style depends on the number of times you wish to wrap it around the head.

In India, the turban has remained a symbol of caste, profession, religious affiliation and class. This has resulted in a dynamic creation of designs and colors to depict these social symbols. There is something unique in every piece of cloth with elaborate features. Incorporation of beadwork with different styles and fancy designing makes these clothes expensive and colorful. They remain a symbol of societal status and wealth.

Palestine leader Yasser Arafat popularized the Keffiyeh though it is not a turban in the strict definition. It is unique in that it is folded diagonally and draped on the head. Its shape is rectangular. The keffiyeh has been picked by neighbors including the Persian Gulf, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. This has also added some unique dimension to it.

Turbans used by desert people have a totally different purpose. They are used to cover the face from dust. They are used as tribal identities as well and can be used as disguise from a distance. They come in different colors and with different meanings.
