Funny Turbans In Different Cultures

People from all over the world have been wearing turbans for centuries. Although the main reasons they were worn in the past was for religious reasons and for protection against cold and heat, this has changed over the years. They are now being worn by many women as fashion accessories and there has even been a recent trend towards wearing funny turbans, embellished in amusing ways.

The culture or group the wearer belongs to will usually dictate how such headgear is tied. The colors worn are usually chosen because of their cultural significance. This helps to establish the identity of the individual. Sometimes the wearing of this headgear is misunderstood by outsiders who are not aware of the significance to the individual.

An example of this is the warrior monks of an armed Sikh order called Nihangs. They wear elaborate head attire that can take over 45 minutes to tie. This headgear is embellished with quoits of steel. They may look ridiculous to some but they are highly respected by those who know their history and their valor in battle.

Rajasthan in North India is also a place where many interesting items of headgear may be seen. The size of headgear indicates the position of a man in society. As there are so many different ways of tying them and color combinations, where a man comes from and his job can be deduced simply from the headgear he wears. The tying is regarded as an art that requires practice.

The Sikhs regard the turban is a gift from their guru. It is not just a piece of cloth to them but has great religious significance. It indicates the self crowning of the individual. The traditional colors of Sikhism are saffron orange, representing courage and wisdom and blue being the color of valor. White and black are also commonly worn and red may be worn for weddings.

A turban is a sacred item for many people and this should be respected. However, for some wearing one is simply an expression of style or an opportunity to be different. Piedad Cordoba who is a politician in Colombia, makes a point of wearing colorful, ornate headgear and she is well known for this. Many African woman can be seen wearing beautifully colorful, patterned headgear.
