An Islamic turban is one of the most common accessories in the Middle Eastern region where Islam is the main religion. The practice of wearing this wraps on the head symbolizes signifies the personality, traditions and beliefs of an individual. Today, many stereotypes and misconceptions have emerged regarding these wraps. In most parts of the world they are associated with terrorism. Despite these challenges, Muslims still wear them as a way of preserving their culture and for religious and customary purposes.

It can simply be described as a long and narrow piece of clothing commonly worn by Muslim men on their heads. The length ranges from 5 to 9 meters. There are a wide variety of materials that can be used to design turbans. The quality depends on the nature of material used. Some of the materials that are commonly used include cotton, fine muslin, silk and synthetics.

There are various ways in which these wraps can be made. Once it has been tied on the head, it is held upright by its own tension or gravity. These styles vary according to the event at hand. Muslims are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the different wrapping techniques. This is because tight wraps may cause headaches and thus are uncomfortable to wear.

They are available in very many colors. The common colors include navy blue, orange, green, white and black. Color plays a significant role in determining the purpose for which the turban is used. Different colors symbolize wealth, prosperity and events. Those that are brightly colored are mainly worn by wealthy individuals as well as those with leadership roles in the society. During celebratory events individuals prefer brightly colored wraps which are decorated with jewelry. Dull colors are suitable for funerals and other solemn occasions.

This headdress is very useful for the inhabitants of areas with hot climatic conditions. Generally, Islamic countries are located in areas where the climate is harsh. It helps to protect their heads form the effect of the hot sun above their heads. It also protects the hair and the face against dust.

In Islamic regions, religious leaders and scholars wear white turbans around special caps. Black colored headdresses are set aside for the direct descendants of Prophet Muhammad. Islamists in Libya, Egypt and Sudan prefer white wraps. Green ones are common in Saudi Arabia and are mainly worn while attending prayers or conducting business.

This practice has gained a lot of popularity since it is seen as descent way of dressing. It portrays a number of values such as self-respect, devotion and manhood. Many people in this region believe that paradise is green and therefore wear turbans during prayer. They also believe that Prophet Muhammad wore a headdress.

An Islamic turban serves numerous purposes and therefore plays a vital role in this religion. It forms a basis for identifying fellow Muslims. This is important because it encourages socialization and strengthens the social ties among the Muslims. In Islam, women are required to cover and mask their faces and heads before going to public places. They use an alternative headdress known as the hijab to accomplish this.
