Killings Of Unarmed African Americans

By Alta Alexander

The headlines news about the deaths of South Carolina black individuals that was on air this week has finally died down. South Carolina is a state that has forty-seven percent black people, but the police department has an ironically eighty people percent white people. The killings of unarmed African Americans normal raise issues of racism that is a vice the world has been fighting for ages.

The jury found that the Mr T Slager policeman that had killed the unarmed person has performed the murder and was charged for it. Many across America felt that justice had been done because the video footage jot from the scene of crime shows that he had a case to answer. He defended himself by claiming that he did that for self-defense the claim could not hold waters because the evidence showed to the contrary. The video shows Mr Slager shooting Mr Scot when he was running and was 20 feet away. That proves that by virtue that Mr. Scot was unarmed he posed no danger to Mr. Slager at that distance.

The footage also reveals Mr. Slager handcuffing Mr. Scott then going to the point where the struggle began then picking something. The police officer then goes back to the position of the body and drops whatever he picked next to Mr. Scott. And it was not the only case of African Americans being killed; others include:

Recently, Michael Brown who is a teenager in Ferguson was killed by another policeman. Eric Garner was not having any arm and was only selling loose cigarettes but was again shot by police in Staten Island by choking him.

Another situation that sparked lots of protests across the nation was that of Tamir Rice. He was a twelve year old boy who was shot when playing using a pellet gun. It is not fair for all these things to happen to black people just like that. Why are police just killing innocent people without valid reasons?

The answer also came this week in Ferguson. The African American population in the suburb of St. Louis has been growing from twenty-five percent in the year 1990 to about sixty-seven percent in the year 2010. With all these demographic developments, the power structure has remained over the years unchanged. By the time Brown was shot everyone in the council from the mayor to council members was white with one exception of only one black.

There was no black individual in school boards and most officers approximately ninety percent were white. It is unacceptable for a place that has a population of 21000 individuals. With this kind of power leaning only on one side, the likelihood of blacks being arrested or given very harsh sentences is high compared to those who are white.

Finally, we want to believe the ruling settled the racist tendencies one and for all in this region. The protests have shaped the municipal politics because some of these candidates have joined the cause.
