The foundation is an institution of charity. In fact, it is recognized as such. This of course means that the donations made can be written come tax season, because they are apparently deductible.
Their mission is simple. That simple mission would be render aids to schools that need it. They do this by enlarging their endowment and then sending some of that money off to a school that they determine has a legitimate need for it. That money is then supposed to help meet that need.

Then there are the legitimately virtuous, those who render their time and labor for free because they simply care so much about the cause they are working for.
