Reasons Why BC Liberal Farmers Need To Be Protected

By Donna Adams

Agricultural land is the source of livelihood for many rural communities in most countries in the world. Therefore, introducing draconian laws that come in the form of Bill 15, which intends to take away the pieces of land that belong to BC liberal farmers is not only dictatorial but also inhuman. This article will outline the importance of agriculture to any community and the reasons why agricultural land must be preserved.

Any society needs to feel secured in terms of food. Food is a very important factor in determining how a group of people or a given nation is advanced. The ability to afford food does not only depend on the availability of money to buy the food but also the availability of food itself. Since farmers are the ones who are tasked with the production of these food materials before they can be processed or consumed, they must be protected at all costs.

It is an outright disregard of the basic human rights to take what someone else depends on to survive. Most of the rural farmers make their living out of the pieces or parcels of land that they inherited from their forefathers or even bought. Therefore, when an individualistic move in the name of private development or even civilization takes away what belongs to these poor majority, it is viewed as lack of respect for human life because they are being killed.

Failure to stand with these people against other forces will mean that the poor majority have to revolt. That is the making of a civil war, something that no society should ever wish for because it kills all the developments made. Wars are retrogressive in nature, and they can be avoided by respecting the rights of other people and treating them with respect.

The lack of support by the government exposes the hypocrisies that are manifested in the political arena. This, in turn, will point at huge flaws within the government structures and cause mistrust among people. Besides, there will be difficulty carrying out normal functions of the government in the case where the subjects do not support the government. To avoid getting to that level, financial aid needs to be given to these farmers.

Again, looking at theories of oppression in philosophy, it will be noted that the oppressed and the oppressor are dehumanized. In simple terms, you cannot dehumanize someone without dehumanizing yourself. What is being done to these farmers is dehumanization, and that act alone makes even the people behind the oppression lesser humans. This should not be the case and, thus, this oppression must stop.

There ought to be ownership by the people if the government wants to start a project that is intended to help them. Any project, no matter how good, will fail if the people are not involved from the start. Imposing projects on people is the reason why societies rebel against governments.

Therefore, fundamental human rights must never be violated. Farmers are human beings with their rights, and this means that their interest has to be protected. The government must ensure that every citizen feels included and safe in their land for better results when it comes to the agricultural field.
