Political Talk Abounds On Both Sides Of The Aisle

By Melody Lyons

Complete fabrications are what passes as political talk in today's electioneering. The screeching about the other party's ideas are insulting in that they usually miss every point made by their opponents. Some of them do not even care whether they have it right, they just need the sound bite.

When one side of the debate calls a significant part of the opposition a terrorist group, misinformation is the order of the day. Kids with autism should not be used by one side stating they will be left on their own if the other side gets their way. The media does not check these statements for accuracy but simply repeats them.

A necessary evil, the media is not doing their job as they pass on one lie after another. It has been said that the media had finally died in 2008, they just did not know about it yet. The facts that are not checked, the assertions that go unverified and the, almost libelous, statements made by one side are simply printed or spoken with a straight face.

One part of the problem is that there is never a forum for true conversation between the parties. Many do not not want to have that exchange of ideas that is necessary for the American public to understand what is and is not truth. This makes for the heated diatribes that make it into the daily papers and news shows.

The debates that are established are nothing more than gotcha comments thinly disguised as thoughtful questions. The American people are not fooled by most of this rhetoric, however, many of them are. They have fallen prey to a cult of personalities that have little substance and great danger to the communication they shout they are participating in.

Uplifting ideas are the way in which American society is improved. The nasty comments, used as talking points, do not have that uplifting quality in them. political talk should be about those better ideas and, by being derogatory to the other side, those ideas can not be presented.
